In 1909 the new Lincoln head one cent coin designed by New York sculptor Vincent D. Brenner replaced the previously issued Indian head penny. The coins reverse featured the designers initials V.D.B. prominently displayed at the bottom of the coin above the coins rim. Public reaction to the designer placing his initials at this location was that it detracted from the coins beauty and called for removal of the letters. The designers initials (V.D.B.) were removed from the Lincoln cent coins reverse that same year. They were later placed on the coins obverse on Lincolns shoulder in 1918.
There were 24,479,000 Lincoln head 1909 VDB one cent coins minted at the Philadelphia Mint, so examples of the 1909 VDB minted in Philadelphia can easily be found in all condition grade levels.
However the San Francisco Mint produced only 484,000 of the 1909-S VDB Lincoln head cent coins. Being the first year of the coins issue and the low number of the coins
minted by the San Fransisco mint makes the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent a much sought after coin by United States coin collectors especially in higher condition grades.
