In 1955 there was an error made at the U.S. Philadelphia Mint in the minting of the 1955 Lincoln head penny. These Lincoln one cent coins were produced by striking blank copper planchets with a die containing the detailed engraving of the coins obverse and reverse. A slight misalignment in these working dies caused doubling of the numbers and letters on the obverse of the 1955 Lincoln cent.
The mistake was discovered by Philadelphia Mint employees after about forty thousand of the one cent coins had been produced.
About twenty four thousand of these errors were already mixed in with normal cents, it was decided that these coins would be released to the general public.
The remaining 1955 double die error coins were destroyed. Mint employees assumed that the error would never be noticed.
When these coins first appeared in general circulation they were quickly noticed and when news of their existence got around
it caused quite a stir and became very popular with U.S. collectors.
