The Battle of Antietam commemorative half dollar coin celebrates an event in America's history that was of truly national historical significance. The issue of the half dollar coin was prompted by the Washington County Historical Society of Hagerstown, Maryland, which designated an Antietam Celebration Commission to co-ordinate upcoming events marking the famous Civil War battle's 75th anniversary.

A bill authorizing the coinage of no more than fifty thousand Antietam half dollar commemorative coins was passed on June 24 of that year. Recognizing the abuses by other commemorative coin programs, this United States government legislation specifically required that the half dollar coins be struck with one single design and by one single mint. The entire authorized mintage of 50,000 coins was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in August of 1937, the first half dollar minted of this coin series was presented to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The remainder were offered by the Washington County Historical Society at $1.65 a piece. Despite the coins historical significant theme and attractive design, the Antietam half dollar did not sell well. Despite substantial advertising and promotional efforts, about thirty two thousand coins were returned to the Philadelphia Mint for melting, leaving a net coinage of eighteen thousand coins.
