A reference list for U.S. coin collectors of rare key date U.S. Indian Head one cent coins by date, mintmark and number of coins minted.
A key date coin is usually the most rare or difficult to find coin of a series. In addition to being rare, key date coins often carry an additional appeal to collectors since they are usually the last coins needed to complete a set or collection.
The 1909-S Indian Head Cent
The 1909-S Indian cent with a total number of coins minted at 309,000 coins, has the lowest mintage of the entire series Lincoln Head coin series. The mintage for this sought after one cent coin is less than half that of the honored 1877 Indian Head cent.
Coin collectors love 1909-S not only for its rarity but because it is one of only two dates of Indian cents struck at the San Francisco Mint, the other coin being the 1908-S. The minting of the 1909 one cent coin was also the last year of production for the Indian Head cent coin series.
Many counterfeit coins of this date exist, so certification by a reputable coin grading service is a must.
The 1877 Indian Head Cent
The 1877 Indian cent has the second lowest mintage of any date in the series with the 1909-S having the lowest and the lowest mintage of any Indian Head cent minted at the Philadelphia mint making it one of the most desirable dates by coin collector entusiasts to own.
There were 852,500 coins minted for general public circulation and an estimated 1,000 proof examples. Most coins of these coins are heavily circulated and show wear accordingly. While the 1877 is no rarer in a high grade condition than some of the other dates minted in the 1870's, heavy demand by coin collectors has always placed a premium price on this date. The same is true of Proof coins of this date.
There are many counterfeit 1877 Indian Head cents known to exist, so certification before purchasing this coin in any grade is highly recommended.
Certified Indian Head Cent Coins
These are coins that have been examined and graded by professionals as to authenticity and condition grade. These coins are often referred to by coin collectors as "Slabs or Slabbed Coins", coins that have been sent to an independent recognized third party coin grading service.
The service determines the condition and authenticity of each coin it grades to provide consumers with a rating on which to judge the coins condition and encapsulates the coin in a sealed see-through plastic holder.
