The buffalo nickel also known as the Indian head nickel was produced from 1913 through 1938 and was designed by James Earle Fraser. The buffalo is atually a bison. When the coins were placed into circulation the public reaction was mixed. One of the biggest design flaws that would plague the coin forever was the nickel's inability to withstand heavy use while in public circulation making these nickels today in high condition grades most desirable to advanced coin collectors.
