U.S. Civil War Tokens

Civil war tokens were privately minted coins that were used as currency to purchase goods and services during the American Civil War during the years 1862 to 1864. Tokens were used primarily in the Midwest and Northeastern parts of the United States.

Civil War tokens came about due to the shortage of U.S. coins made of gold, silver and copper. Most tokens were copper with a one cent denomination. being hoarded by U.S. citizens. Tokens first appeared in 1862 and by 1864 it is estimated that there were over twenty five million of them in circulation with thousands of different varieties. The value and prices of Civil War tokens is determined by metal composition, number of tokens minted and condition.
