The Lincoln cent or also referred to as Lincoln head penny began production by the United States Mint in 1909 and is till currently being minted. Designed by Victor D. Brenner, the coins first year of issue in 1909 featured the designers initials "VDB" centered at the bottom of the reverse side of the coin, the initials were remvoved on all years after that. During World War 2 (1943 to 1945) the coins basic metal composition that consisted of ninety five percent copper was considered a strategic meatal and the U.S. Mint was denied the use of the metal resulting in the coins being minted from steel and zinc coated, often referred to as "steel cents". From 1909 to 1959 the coins reverse features two wheat stalks, in 1959 the coins reverse was changed to depict the Lincoln Memorial located in Washington D.C.
